Index to Newcastle Courant 1723-1800, page 677: "27 Sep 1783, Saturday: Mr Christopher Laidman, son of Mr Laidman, surgeon in Morpeth, was ranging through a wood near that town, he unfortunately rushed into an old coal pit, at about 40 fathoms depth, which was hid from sight by bushes, and was crushed by the fall in so dangerous a manner that he soon after expired. His brother, who was with him, narrowly escaped the same fate."
