Index to Newcastle Courant 1723-1800, page 677: "27 Sep 1783, Saturday: Mr Christopher Laidman, son of Mr Laidman, surgeon in Morpeth, was ranging through a wood near that town, he unfortunately rushed into an old coal pit, at about 40 fathoms depth, which was hid from sight by bushes, and was crushed by the fall in so dangerous a manner that he soon after expired. His brother, who was with him, narrowly escaped the same fate."
There is an administration bond in the library of the University of Durham (A99), dated 24 December 1795, which reads: "Know all Men by these Presents, That We Francis Laidman of Morpeth in the County of Northumberland Gentleman William Laidman of Morpeth in the County of Northumberland Gentleman and Thomas Thompson of Morpeth in the County of Northumberland yeoman are held and firmly bound unto the Honourable and Right Reverend Father in God SHUTE, by Divine Providence Lord Bishop of Durham... in the Penal Sum of three hundred & fifty Pounds... to be paid to the said Reverend Father in God..... The Condition of this Obligation is such, that if the above bounden Francis Laidman the natural and lawful Father and also Administrator... of Christopher Laidman late of Morpeth aforesaid in the Parish of Morpeth and in the Diocese of Durham a bachelor deceased...."
Francis Laidman (L1012) is Christopher’s father, and William Laidman (M1026) his brother.
