From Barnesville Record-Review, Clay County, Minnesota, Thursday, Sept. 8, 1932: (sent to N. Laidman by Tom Gaffy)
THOMAS GAFFY, PIONEER, DIES
Thomas Gaffy, one of the community's earliest pioneers, died Sunday night at the home of Mrs. E. R. Blankenship in this city.
Making his home at Pelican Rapids, Mr. Gaffy had come to Prairie View last week to attend the Clouston funeral, and from there came to Barnesville to be present at the Sixty Year Jubilee on Monday. Though not in the best of health, he had been up and around every day. Death was caused by heart failure.
Coming to Prairie View in 1871, Mr. Gaffy had been a resident of this community for 61 years. He was born June 9, 1849 at Oshkosh, Wis., and in 1871 settled on a homestead in Prairie View, where he lived 48 years. While in Prairie View he served as town clerk, school clerk and constable.
On July 12, 1876 he was married at Moorhead to Jane Laidman, who died in 1899. The surviving children are Ella Pattison, Bagley; Effie Strachan, Pelican Rapids; Laura Strahon, Sentinel Butte, N. Dak.; Lottie Gaffy, Skagway, Alaska; Mattie McDunn, Bagley. A son, Arthur C., died in 1919.
He also leaves the following brothers and sisters: Mike Gaffy, Oshkosh, Wis.; Tim Gaffy, Fond du Lac, Wis.; James Gaffy, Vandyne, Wis.; Mrs. Elin Carroll, Wolf Point, Mont. There are ten grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Gaffy enjoyed an unusually wide acquaintance in the community and was liked and respected by all who knew him. Eloquent tributes paid to him at the program on Monday evidenced the high esteem in which he was held.
The funeral was held this Thursday afternoon from the Congregational Church, Rev. H. T. Andrews officiating. The remains were laid to rest in Prairie View cemetery. There were two sets of pall bearers, as follows: Honorary, S. O. Solum, George Whalen, John McGrath, N. B. Hanson, A. Hughes, Walter Peake; Active, Tom Strachan, Leo Kenfield, Joseph Cloutson, Ernest Weidel, Wm. Hughes, Bennie Olson. Among those who came from a distance to attend the funeral were: Mrs. Jen Gaffy and Thomas, St. Paul; Mrs. Pattison, Mrs. W. J. McDunn, Bagley; Mrs. Laura Strahon, Mrs. Audrey Nunn, Sentinel Butte, N. Dak; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Blair, Calloway; Mrs. D. St. Martin, St. Paul.
